With designing a well-built school that can enhance the good quality of life of the Senegalese students is the main goal of our design for the Senegal School. The design idea that we proposed is to create a deep and intimate connection between one program and another. The design is created from a few key process ideas as follows:
st Livability The design used materials which are easy to find in the local area and also considering the efficiency of the budget. The local sources that are used for the design are bricks for the main structure material, woven bamboo for the classroom partitions, and used wood planks for furniture materials. The use of local materials also aims to increase sustainability. We can create through local source because simplicity can create livability of life especially the Senegalese students.
nd Linearity The programming of the design is to create community activities that are connected to one another. For example, the classroom to the garden (which is located in the centre of the school), canteen to the classroom, and the teacher’s area to the student’s area. All of the programs are close to one another and create linearity for the design.
rd Linking The design we created is using moveable partitions without fully separating with a hard boundary as the barrier for the classrooms that can create a connection between rooms if needed. The linking idea aims at the continuity with allowing a visible eye view connection to one another with using woven bamboo as it is not fully transparent.
th Centralized The existing Moraceae tree acts as the centre of the Senegalese school that can be used as a tool for the locals to communicate and doing activities together. While also preserving the existing tree, the design also accommodates the students to discuss and doing activities from the sunken lounge right below the tree. Because the sunken student lounge area is right next to the orchard, the students can also learn and study on what is being planted on the orchard.
th Tranquility As the summary of the chosen materials, the created programs, the design and form that are developed, all these processes are to create tranquillity in the design, students, and the locals. Well- being is created by a serene and comfy space. We believe by creating a well-built design based on human interaction and comfort is the most important thing as we hope can be represented on our human-based design.
